Code P0717 OBD2: What Causes it, Symptoms, and How To Solve It
Your “check engine light” has come on again. Upon investigation, you find out it’s a P0717 code. What is that and what do you do about it?
Anytime that light comes on, it’s potentially serious. In this case, an On-Board-Diagnostics (OBD) system will tell you that your input/turbine speed sensor—part of your automatic transmission—isn’t sending the right signals. That means your transmission isn’t functioning properly.
Why is the Input/turbine Speed Sensor Important?
To refresh all our memories: A transmission’s job is to transfer engine power into the right amount of inertia to the wheels of the automobile so that speed and acceleration can be controlled. The transmission sensor is the device that tells how much torque to apply.
The sensor (B Circuit) is a small, but obviously an important part of your transmission, usually mounted and bolted on top of the transmission or sometimes found inside the bell housing, depending on the vehicle.
Symptoms of code P0717
Once a sensor is on the blink, you’ll start noticing problems. Jerking or stalling are common symptoms, as your transmission isn’t receiving the right information to switch gears properly. The check engine light will eventually come on, and you may notice reduced fuel efficiency over time.
As with any transmission problem, you can’t afford to let these problems continue; they can lead to an accident and can ultimately destroy your transmission.
Possible solution for fault code P0717
The first piece of detective work is to find out why the sensor is misfiring. Most transmission problems are the result of dirty fluid, or no fluid at all, which can cause any part of your transmission to malfunction.
Simple problem, simple solution: Flush your transmission and replace the fluid and the filter.
Or you might have a transmission component that’s on the fritz, such as a solenoid that needs to be replaced, or an electrical problem like a short or a worn wire. Even a faulty engine temperature sensor can cause your transmission sensor to go haywire, so everything needs to be checked out thoroughly ASAP.
