What is a transmission rebuild kit?

A transmission rebuild kit is a set of components that restores an automatic transmission by replacing the parts that wear: gaskets, seals, O-rings, sealing rings, frictions, steels and, depending on the kit, the filter, bands, bushings and pistons. It is made up of:

1. Overhaul kit. All the gaskets, seals, sealing rings, O-rings and small components.
2. Filter. Keeps the transmission fluid clean and free of debris.
3. Frictions and steel plates. The clutch packs that transfer power through the transmission.
4. Bands. Replace the worn bands that hold the drums on certain gear ranges.

What is the difference between a rebuild kit and an overhaul kit?

The two names are often used for the same thing, but they are not the same:

1. Overhaul kit. The soft parts only: gaskets, seals, sealing rings and O-rings. It reseals the transmission but does not replace the clutches.
2. Rebuild kit. The overhaul kit plus the frictions and steels, and often the filter. Master kits go further with bands, bushings, washers or pistons, so the unit gets both the parts that failed and the parts that would fail next.

Are transmission rebuild kits worth it?

When the case and the hard parts are sound, a rebuild kit is the cost-effective repair. Replacing the whole transmission makes sense when the repair cost exceeds the price of the parts and labor, or when the housing is cracked.

How much does a transmission rebuild kit cost?

It depends on the transmission, the vehicle and what the kit includes. Older three- and four-speed units such as the C4 or TH350 cost the least; late six-speed units such as the 6R140 cost the most. The price shown on each kit is the complete kit, with no add-ons at checkout. Labor is extra and is usually the larger part of a rebuild.

Even so, a rebuild kit costs a fraction of a replacement transmission. Compare what each kit includes before you compare prices.
