FAQ
What are the symptoms of a burnt or worn-out 2-4 band?
The most common sign is a "2nd gear slip" or a total loss of both 2nd and 4th gears. If your transmission shifts from 1st gear straight to 3rd gear, or if the RPMs flare up during the 1-2 or 3-4 shift, the band is likely failing or out of adjustment.
What does "2-Strut" mean for this band?
The "2-strut" design refers to the reinforced lugs where the servo pin and the anchor pin apply pressure to the band. This design is standard for TH700-R4 and 4L60E transmissions and is built to withstand the high-apply pressure required for firm 2nd and 4th gear engagement.
How to adjust 4L60E band clearance.
The 4L60E does not use an external band adjustment screw. Band clearance is set internally by 2–4 servo travel, which is determined by servo pin length, band thickness, and internal component stack-up. The 2–4 band is applied by the 2–4 servo, and proper clearance is established by selecting the correct servo pin length. Ideal 2–4 band clearance: 0.060in–0.090in
Do I need to remove the transmission to replace this band?
Yes. Unlike some external sensors or solenoids, the 2-4 band is located deep inside the transmission case. The transmission must be removed and the front pump and input drum pulled to replace it.
Why should I choose this band over a Kevlar or high-performance version?
This OEM-style band is ideal for daily drivers and stock rebuilds. While Kevlar bands are harder, they can sometimes "glaze" the drum if the shift isn't aggressive enough. This standard material provides the smooth, consistent engagement expected in a factory-style build.
