What are the symptoms of a failing 3rd-4th clutch pack?

The most common signs include the transmission "slipping" when shifting into 3rd gear, high RPMs without a corresponding increase in speed, or a total loss of 3rd and 4th gears (leaving you with only 1st and 2nd). If your transmission feels like it’s in neutral when it should be in 3rd, these friction plates likely need replacement.

How many friction plates do I need for a full rebuild of the 3-4 Clutch?

Standard factory 3-4 clutch pack typically uses 6 friction plates. However, many performance rebuilds or "high-capacity" setups use 7, 8, or even 9 thinner plates. Always check your specific clutch pack clearance and backing plate thickness before ordering.

Should I soak these friction plates in ATF before installation?

Yes. It is highly recommended to soak friction plates in clean Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) for at least 15–30 minutes before assembly. This prevents "dry start" glazing and ensures immediate lubrication upon the first engagement.

Why did my 3-4 clutch burn out again?
