FAQ

Do I need to replace my steels every time I replace the friction plates?

It is highly recommended. Even if steels look "clean," they often develop microscopic warping or "heat glaze" that prevents the new frictions from seating properly. For a 6-speed transmission like the 6L80, where shift timing is managed in milliseconds by the TCM, perfectly flat steels are critical for shift quality.

What causes the steels in the 3-5-Reverse pack to burn up?

Heat is the primary enemy of the 6L80. Frequent towing or a failing torque converter clutch (TCC) can send excessive heat through the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R hubs. Replacing your steels with this high-durability pack helps ensure the clutch system can shed heat more effectively than worn, glazed originals.

Do these steels require any special "break-in" period?

The break-in happens during the first few miles of driving. It is vital to perform a Transmission Fast Learn (Adaptive Reset) using a scan tool after a rebuild. This allows the computer to calibrate the pressure needed for the new, thicker steel and friction surfaces.
