Preventative Power Steering Maintenance: Simple Steps
We’ve all been spoiled by one of life’s simplest conveniences: power steering.
Once upon a time, you had to crank the steering wheel of an automobile to drive it, much like hard-turning the helm of a ship fighting against the billows at sea. Today, steering’s so much easier--provided you take care of your power steering system.
Detection is Key
Almost all problems with power steering have to do with fluid. The clear, pinkish liquid that keeps your power steering working is necessary for maintaining the in-and-out flow of hydraulic pressure that lets your wheels move so easily.
When that fluid becomes too low or too dirty, things don’t move like they should; it’s definitely past time to check your power steering dipstick.
Located at different places under the hood—depending on the make and model of your car—the dipstick will tell you how far under the “fill” line your power steering fluid reservoir is.
For the most accurate measurement, the dipstick should be checked when the engine is running, so be careful not to burn your hands. Plus, you can always look on your driveway or garage floor for an early indication of a leak.
Keep it Clean
If your fluid level’s ok but you’re still having problems, then the problem may be that the fluid’s dirty. One way to tell is by color: If the fluid on the dipstick is dark or brownish, it needs to be flushed and replaced.
If that’s the case, you need a new filter as well. Like other automotive liquids, power steering fluid can become contaminated over time, so cleaning it out as part of your regular maintenance plan is a good idea.
Replacing Parts
In addition to fluid-related problems, power steering components can wear out over time. Checking these when you check your fluid can catch other problems, such as worn gaskets, leaky hoses, or a damaged reservoir (fluid tank).
More serious issues are a malfunctioning pump, pinions, or a damaged shaft, all of which can all keep the spinning parts of your system from working.
