Causes of P0613 code

P0613 code: common causes and how to solve it step by step

OBD-II error code P0163 indicates a voltage problem in the transmission control module (TCM) that can affect vehicle performance and drivability. Read on to find out what the P0613 code means, its causes and possible solutions.

What is the P0613 code?

Error code P0613 indicates a problem in the vehicle's transmission control module (TCM). This component is the brain that controls the operation of the automatic transmission and the P0613 code indicates that proper communication is not established between the TCM and other internal vehicle components.

Possible causes of code P0613

The P0613 code can be generated by different causes, the most common are:

TCM failures

A damaged or defective transmission control module can cause a P0613 code. This component is a computer-driven electronic system that controls gear shifts on automatic transmission vehicles.

It is placed in the engine compartment and its function is to receive and process information from the Engine Control Module (ECM) for smooth and safe shifting. Therefore, a TCM failure should never be ignored.

Wiring problems

If the wires connecting the TCM to the ECM are damaged, deteriorated, corroded or disconnected they cause data problems, which causes the P0613 code to be generated. In some cases, the ground connection is insufficient, or there is an open circuit causing power supply problems.

Software programming error

Although rare, TCM software can exhibit errors caused by faulty updates, electrical discharges, electromagnetic interference, excess water or voltage variations. Occasionally, the software is subject to manufacturing errors, although in these cases the error symptoms occur almost immediately after the vehicle leaves the dealership.

On which vehicles is the code P0613 frequent?

The P0613 code is most commonly found on the following vehicles:

  • General Motors: GMC, Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac.
  • Chrysler: Jeep, RAM and Jeep.

Fault symptoms related to code P0613

The most common faults associated with a P0613 code are:

  • Check Engine light comes on
  • Irregular vehicle operation, such as lack of response when accelerating, loss of power or jerking when braking.
  • Problems starting and/or running the vehicle.
  • Problems with shifting: jerky, slippery shifting or not shifting gears.
  • Emergency mode is activated due to power failures.
  • Engine may stall frequently, shut down or have erratic idling.

How to troubleshoot a P0613 code?

Any fault that occurs in your vehicle should be fixed as soon as possible, especially if the Check Engine light comes on. The first step is to take your vehicle to a specialized automatic transmission shop to have it checked with a CAN OBD scanner.

How to repair P0613 code

The ways to solve this fault are:

Manual Repairs

The mechanic should check the vehicle for possible physical damage to the TCM or wiring and will check the connections to ensure that they are correct and that the parts are not corroded. If any faults are found, the wiring should be replaced or connected correctly.

Resetting the TCM

The mechanic may reset the transmission computer to verify that the software is in good condition and that it is not malfunctioning from the transmission or from driving. If any problems are found, a reset or replacement of the TCM may be necessary.

Once the appropriate repairs have been made, the P013 code should be cleared, and the scanner should be retested to ensure that errors are no longer being generated.

Importance of solving the P0613 code

The P0613 code indicates a problem that requires immediate professional attention. The TCM is the component that controls key processes for the vehicle to function properly, so an unattended failure could have fatal results, such as a total transmission failure that has a very high repair cost.
